Start Early – Don't Rush
The biggest mistake people make is waiting until the last minute to start sorting. When time is short, stress goes up and decision-making gets harder.
Start at least 3–6 months before your move. This gives you time to sort thoughtfully, donate carefully, and say goodbye to your home in a way that feels right.
Step 1: Start the Conversation
Before anyone picks up a box, there needs to be a conversation. If you're a senior, talk to your family. If you're an adult child, start the conversation gently.
Questions to ask:
- What matters most to you in your home?
- Are you thinking about moving, or just wanting less clutter?
- How can I support you without taking over?
A neutral third party—like a professional downsizing helper—can sometimes make decisions easier by removing emotional attachment from the equation.
Step 2: Create a Floor Plan for the New Space
If you're moving, know what space you're moving into. Measure the new rooms. Plan which furniture will fit. This helps you decide what to keep and what to let go.
Step 3: Sort Room by Room
The best way to avoid overwhelm is to go one room at a time.
For each room:
- Empty out one closet or cabinet at a time
- Sort into piles: Keep, Donate, Toss
- Label boxes clearly so you know what's inside
- Keep a "maybe" box for items you're not sure about. Revisit it after 30 days
The Room-by-Room Breakdown
- Kitchen
- Keep only what you actually use. Extra mugs, gadgets, and cookware can be donated.
- Bedroom
- Clear out old clothes. If you haven't worn it in 2 years, let it go.
- Living Room
- Decide which furniture fits your new space. Take measurements!
- Garage/Attic/Basement
- These are where clutter hides. Be ruthless—what's in boxes you haven't opened in years?
- Memorabilia
- Take photos of sentimental items and keep just a few special pieces.
Step 4: Honor Sentimental Items
This is often the hardest part. You don't have to get rid of everything.
Tips:
- Take a photo of the item, then let it go to someone who will use it
- Keep a few special pieces—not everything
- Pass meaningful items to family who will treasure them
Step 5: Schedule Donations and Removal
Once you've sorted, you'll have piles of things to donate and things to toss. Professional help can handle:
- Loading items for donation
- Dropping off at local charities
- Taking junk to the landfill
- Hauling away large furniture
Step 6: Enjoy Your Space
The goal of downsizing isn't just to have less stuff. It's to have more peace, more freedom, and a home that works for you.
