What Nurses See: Hidden Home Hazards for Older Adults

During an 18‑month pilot study, nurses from Cedars‑Sinai visited older adults and identified common but overlooked hazards — such as loose rugs, poor lighting, and medication mix‑ups.

Here's what the nurses saw — and what you can do about it:

Loose rugs. That beautiful oriental rug? It's a fall waiting to happen. Nurses recommend removing all loose rugs or securing them with non‑slip backing.

Poor lighting. Dim hallways, unlit staircases, and dark entryways are accident hotspots. Install brighter bulbs, add motion‑sensor lights, and ensure light switches are at both ends of every hallway.

Medication mix‑ups. Multiple prescriptions, similar‑looking pills, and confusing dosage instructions lead to dangerous errors. Use a weekly pill organizer and review all medications with a pharmacist.

Clutter in walkways. Magazines, shoes, pet toys, and extension cords create tripping hazards. Keep all walking paths completely clear.

Broken sidewalks and uneven steps. Outdoor hazards are just as dangerous as indoor ones. Report needed repairs to building management or the city.

What to do next: Do a "nurse's walk‑through" of your home. Get down to eye level and look for anything that could cause a fall. Fix it today.
